Payload is the weight your van can legally carry once it leaves the factory, and it decides whether a finished conversion is legal to load. Mercedes publishes 3,450 to 3,814 pounds on the most common camper platform in the country. A four-season build and two adults can spend almost all of it before you pack a single bag. Here is where every pound goes.
The short answer
- Payload is the gross vehicle weight rating minus what the van already weighs. On a 170 inch high roof Sprinter 2500, Mercedes publishes 3,450 to 3,814 lb.
- A conversion weighs between roughly 1,100 and 2,600 lb, so the build alone can take two thirds of that before anyone gets in.
- Water is the heaviest thing you control. A 30 gallon fresh tank is 250 lb full, and the grey tank holds most of it back aboard until you dump.
- The rear axle reaches its own limit before the vehicle does, which is why the figure to check is GAWR and not only GVWR.
- Moving a 170 inch Sprinter from 2500 to 3500 buys 455 to 819 lb, and the 4500 buys 2,568 to 2,932 lb on the same wheelbase and roof.
- Suspension upgrades change how a loaded van drives. They do not raise the rating on the door label, and nothing sold aftermarket does.
What payload actually means on a camper van
Payload is the weight a vehicle is rated to carry: passengers, the conversion bolted into it, water, propane, food, tools, bikes and whatever ends up in the back. It is not a comfort figure and it is not a manufacturer's suggestion. It is the gross vehicle weight rating minus what the empty van already weighs, and by the time a conversion is finished most of it is already spent.
That matters more on a camper than on almost any other vehicle, because a camper is the rare case where you buy the payload and then hand it to somebody else to spend. The shop chooses the framing material, the tank size, the battery chemistry and the roof rack. You find out what is left when the van is finished.
The four numbers on the door label
The numbers are neither optional nor hidden. Federal rule 567.4 requires a permanent label on the driver's door pillar, latch post or door edge, carrying the gross vehicle weight rating and a gross axle weight rating for each axle in order from front to rear. The same rule sets the floor for a GVWR at the unloaded weight plus the rated cargo load plus 150 pounds for every designated seating position, which is a reminder that the rating was calculated for people as well as for cargo.

Four numbers, one of which you can change and three of which you cannot. Curb weight is the only one that moves, and it moves in the wrong direction the moment a builder starts work.
The rear axle is the limit that breaks first
A camper conversion loads the back of the van. The bed sits over the rear wheels, the garage sits behind them, the water tank goes under the floor at the back because that is where the space is, and the battery bank and the roof deck follow the same logic. A van can sit comfortably under its GVWR and still be over its rear axle rating.
That is the failure almost nobody plans for, and it is why a scale ticket has to be read axle by axle rather than as one total. A single overall figure will tell you the van is fine right up to the point where the rear tyres, the rear springs and the rear brakes disagree.
Published payload, chassis by chassis
Mercedes publishes payload by wheelbase, roof height and trim, which is the cleanest chassis data available in this category. The 170 inch high roof is the platform most American shops build on, and this is what it is rated to carry.

Mercedes publishes the Sprinter payload table on the same page that prices the Cargo Van from $48,990 to $75,830 across every configuration. Two things stand out. The longer the van, the less it carries, because the extra bodywork is weight before you add anything. And the trim step from a 2500 to a 4500 is worth more payload than every decision your builder will make put together.
Ford and Ram do not publish a comparable payload table, so on a Transit or a ProMaster the door label on the actual van is the figure to work from rather than a number copied off a comparison site. Ford's own listing covers the Transit's configurations and its factory all-wheel drive without going near a weight figure, which is the honest state of the published data on that platform.
Drivetrain moves the number as well. All-wheel drive adds weight to the chassis and takes it straight back out of payload, which is why Mercedes prints a range on the 2500 rather than a single figure. If you are ordering a van with the intention of leaving pavement, the payload you are buying is the bottom of that range, not the top.
What a conversion actually weighs
Conversions that have been weighed and published land between roughly 1,100 and 2,600 pounds. That is the honest answer, and the spread inside it is not craftsmanship. It is materials, tank size, battery chemistry and how much of the roof is carrying hardware.
The low end is a plywood interior, a 20 gallon tank, a lithium bank and no rack. The high end is a four-season build with a garage, insulated walls, solid counters, 40 gallons of water and a walkable deck over the top. Both are legitimate vans. Only one of them leaves you room to load it.

The battery line is the one worth staring at. Swapping a documented 540 amp hour lithium bank for the same usable capacity in AGM adds roughly 530 pounds, which is a sixth of the payload on a 170 inch 2500 spent on chemistry alone. Lithium is sold as a capacity upgrade. On a camper it is a payload decision first.
Water is the other line that dominates, and it is the one owners forget because it is not on the invoice. Water weighs 8.34 pounds a gallon, so 30 gallons is 250 pounds and 40 gallons is 334 pounds. The grey tank does not give it back either: it fills as the fresh tank empties, so the pair of them keep most of that weight aboard until you find a dump station.
A four-season build, weighed line by line

How your builder spends your payload
You cannot choose a lighter counter material once you have signed for a package. Construction method is the shop's decision, made before you called, and it is the largest single lever on what the finished van weighs.
Off Highway Van in Salt Lake City builds in aluminium rather than timber, which takes several hundred pounds out of the conversion, and that is the most direct structural answer to a payload problem anyone in the country is selling. It is priced accordingly at $165,000 to $245,000. A plywood and pine framed build at a third of that money does the same job in the same shape and asks the buyer to carry the difference in pounds.
Weight is not a specification most shops publish, so it has to be asked for. Comparing American builders on construction method rather than on layout photographs puts a light aluminium van next to a timber one at half the price, and the trade between them is money for pounds rather than money for quality.
Shops that build on one chassis have an advantage here that has nothing to do with skill. Glampervan works on nothing but the ProMaster 136 inch high roof at $30,000 to $65,000, and DM Vans builds on the ProMaster only at $97,000 to $105,000. A shop repeating the same platform has weighed its own van many times and can tell you what yours will come out at. A shop working across three platforms is estimating.
Tank sizing is the decision worth arguing about at the design stage, because it is free to change on a drawing and expensive to change afterwards. A builder who fits 40 gallons as standard has spent 334 pounds of your payload on water you may never carry, and two 20 gallon tanks plumbed in series give the same capacity with the option of running one.
Costs money to get wrong
The rear axle goes over before the van does

Two adults and 30 gallons of water take 590 lb of that before a single bag goes in, and almost all of it sits behind the rear axle. Vans loaded that way chew through rear tyres in 15,000 miles instead of 40,000, cook rear brakes on long descents, and hand an insurer a documented reason to look hard at the loaded weight after a claim. Get the finished weight in writing, per axle, and treat a shop that will not produce it as having answered the question.
The chassis upgrade that buys the most payload
Everything a builder can do about weight is worth a few hundred pounds. The trim you order the van in is worth thousands, and it is the only payload decision that is still open when you buy and closed forever the moment the van is built.
On the 170 inch high roof, moving from a 2500 to a 3500 takes published payload from 3,450 to 3,814 lb up to 4,269 lb. That is 455 to 819 pounds bought with a line on the order form. The 3500XD is published at 5,000 to 5,309 lb, and the 4500 at 6,382 lb, which is 2,568 to 2,932 pounds more than the 2500 on the same wheelbase and the same roof.
The dollar side is a dealer order line rather than a headline on the configurator, so ask for it as a number and divide it by the pounds. Then set the answer against what the alternatives cost. Aluminium framing and composite panels save several hundred pounds and are priced into a build starting at $165,000. Nothing sold in the aftermarket raises a GVWR at all. Against those two, a trim upgrade is almost always the cheapest payload on the table.
When the 4500 is the right answer
A 4500 nearly doubles payload on the same footprint, and that is the correct call for a genuinely heavy build: a four-season van with a full bathroom, a large battery bank, 40 gallons or more of water, a garage carrying motorbikes and a roof deck. Those vans exist, they are usually above $150,000, and they will be over their rating on a 2500 with two people aboard.
For everybody else it is a great deal of van. The heavier trims ride firmer when empty, run different tyres, and cost more to service for the whole time you own them. If the build is a weekender with a 20 gallon tank and no rack, the payload argument does not reach far enough to justify the trim.
Weigh the van, then plan around the number
Every figure above is a starting point. The only number that describes your van is the one printed at a scale with your van on it, and there is no substitute for the errand. Public truck scales sit at truck stops on most interstate corridors, they are open to anybody, and they weigh steer axle, drive axle and gross in one pass.
Weigh it twice. Once as the shop hands it over, empty, which gives you the real curb weight and therefore the real payload. Then again fully loaded for a trip, with the water tank full, the fridge stocked and the people who normally travel in it sitting in their seats. The gap between those two tickets is your honest cargo allowance, and it is nearly always smaller than the builder's estimate.
What to do at the scale
- Go empty first, straight from the shop, with the fresh tank drained and nobody in the passenger seat
- Ask for the axle split, not just the gross, because the rear number is the one that fails
- Use the reweigh option on the same day, usually a couple of dollars, for the loaded run
- Load the second run the way you actually travel: full water, full fridge, bikes on, everyone aboard
- Compare each axle against the GAWR on the door label before you compare the total against GVWR
- Keep both tickets in the van, because they are the cheapest evidence you will ever own
That ticket does more than settle an argument with yourself. One Colorado owner's reclassification of a converted van required a certified weight slip among the documents, which makes the scale visit and the paperwork that reclassifies a van the same errand rather than two.
Certification does not settle weight either. An RVIA certified build is inspected against the industry's electrical, propane and egress standards, which is a manufacturing programme rather than a weigh-in, and the loaded weight of your particular van stays yours to know.
Getting payload back after the build
Suppose the ticket comes back bad. Some of it is recoverable and some of it is not, and the difference is worth understanding before you spend money on the wrong half.
What works is subtraction. A smaller fresh tank, a lithium bank in place of AGM, the roof rack off, the second spare left at home, and an honest look at what has been living in the garage since the first trip. What does not work is anything sold as a payload upgrade. Air assist bags and load range E tyres change how a loaded van sits and how it drives, which is a real improvement, and they change nothing on the door label. The GVWR was assigned by the manufacturer and it is fixed for the life of the vehicle.
Taking 700 lb back out, after the build

The last row is the one that matters. Every other line is a retrofit you can buy your way out of, and the first four together give back roughly 700 lb on a van that was 400 lb over. Doing the same four decisions on a drawing before the build starts costs nothing.
Which is the argument for settling weight at the design meeting rather than at the scale. Ask for a target and a line-item estimate before anyone cuts material. The same change once the van is on the shop floor pushes the delivery date out as well as the invoice, because a tank swap in a finished van means taking the floor back up.

Almost every conversion weight a shop quotes is a dry weight: no water, no propane, no people, no gear. We have seen a builder's 1,900 lb figure and an owner's scale ticket differ by 900 lb, and every pound of the gap was legitimate. Ask for the number with tanks full and two adults aboard, and ask what the shop assumed for cargo. If the answer is that they do not assume anything, you now know the estimate is a floor rather than a forecast.
What the extra weight costs to live with
A van sitting near its rating is not only a legal problem. It burns more fuel on every mile, wears tyres and brakes faster, climbs worse and stops later, and it is harder to place on a mountain descent than the same van 800 pounds lighter.
None of those lines is large on its own, and all of them land in the monthly cost of running the van, where fuel and maintenance are two of the bigger items. Weight is one of the few specifications that keeps charging you for the whole time you own the vehicle.
There is a resale argument too, and it is quieter than it should be. A van with scale tickets, a stated payload and a builder's weight sheet is a van a second buyer can price. A van whose owner does not know what it weighs is a van a careful buyer walks away from, and the careful buyers are the ones paying the most.
The whole subject comes down to one habit. Treat payload as a budget you are spending rather than a limit you are approaching, ask what each decision costs in pounds the way you ask what it costs in dollars, and the van you collect will be one you can actually load.
